Wer bislang ein Mind-Mapping-Programm mit Open-Source-Lizenz suchte, landete fast zwangsl\u00e4ufig bei FreeMind<\/a>. Seit wenigen Tagen gibt es jedoch eine Alternative, die ich ausgesprochen \u00fcberzeugend finde: XMind<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Was das Erstellen von Mind Maps angeht, so bietet XMind alles, was man in der Praxis braucht. Weil man den einzelnen Knoten Notizen, Links, Bilder, Attachments und Symbole hinzuf\u00fcgen kann, l\u00e4sst sich auch ein umfangreicheres Konzept problemlos in einer Mind Map verwalten. Bez\u00fcglich der Formatierung bietet XMind viele M\u00f6glichkeiten, wobei mir pers\u00f6nlich insbesondere die Umwandlung einer klassischen Mind Map in eine Sitemap wichtig ist (weil man so aus einem Brainstorming rasch eine Website-Struktur entwickeln kann). Details sind den sch\u00f6n gemachten Demo-Videos<\/a> zu entnehmen.<\/p>\n

XMind wurde auf Basis der Eclipse<\/a>-Plattform entwickelt und besitzt deshalb eine sehr flexible Oberfl\u00e4che. Die meisten Funktionen sind nicht in Dialogen oder Paletten untergebracht, sondern in Registern, die rings um das Hauptfenster angedockt werden. So kann man sich seine ideale Arbeitsumgebung massschneidern und hat schnellen Zugriff auf h\u00e4ufig ben\u00f6tigte Funktionen. Ein weiterer Vorteil der Eclipse-Plattform ist, dass sie auf Java basiert und deshalb f\u00fcr verschiedene Betriebssysteme verf\u00fcgbar ist; so l\u00e4uft auch XMind gleichermassen unter Windows, Mac OS und Linux. Sogar als Portable Application, die direkt von einem USB-Stick aus gestartet werden kann und mit allen drei Betriebssystemen zurechtkommt, ist XMind verf\u00fcgbar. Wer m\u00f6chte kann XMind zudem als Plug-in in eine existierende Eclipse-Installation integrieren.<\/p>\n

Wie kommt es, dass \u00fcber Nacht eine derart ausgereifte Software als Open Source verf\u00fcgbar wird? XMind gibt es schon l\u00e4nger, aber bisher nur als kommerzielle Software. Die Freigabe der Standard-Version unter der Eclipse Public Licence (EPL) bzw. der GNU Lesser General Public Licence (LGPL)<\/a> ist eine Promotionsmassnahme f\u00fcr die weiterhin kommerziell vertriebene Pro-Version. Letztere bietet zust\u00e4zlich einen Pr\u00e4sentations-Modus, eine Gantt-Darstellung f\u00fcr Aufgaben, Audio-Anmerkungen und zus\u00e4tzliche Export-Formate (MindJet MindManager, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, PDF, RTF). Ausserdem kann man mit der Pro-Version Mind Maps auf share.xmind.net<\/a> publizieren und dabei den Zugriff durch andere Personen beschr\u00e4nken – die Standard-Version bietet zwar ebenfalls eine Upload-Funktion, aber alle Mind Maps sind \u00f6ffentlich. Ist XMind somit eine Crippleware<\/a>, die mit dem Schlagwort «Open Source» lediglich Werbung f\u00fcr ein kommerzielles Produkt macht? Ich denke nicht. Auch die freie Standard-Version ist ein ausgesprochen leistungf\u00e4higes und sch\u00f6n gemachtes Programm, das man sehr wohl produktiv nutzen kann. Die Zusatzfunktionen der Pro-Versionen sind mehrheitlich verzichtbar bzw. substituierbar. Ausserdem muss man sich von der Idee verabschieden, dass Open Source Software nur von Idealisten f\u00fcr Gotteslohn entwickelt wird bzw. werden soll. Der Verkauf von Zusatzdienstleistungen rund um Open Source Software sichert den Entwicklern ein Auskommen, was wiederum der Qualit\u00e4t der Software zugute kommt. Insofern geh\u00f6rt dem Dualen Lizenzierungs-Modell die Zukunft.
